Deliverance From Evil Spirits by Michael Scanlan
Reviewed by Amanda2 114 pages, this book explains basically and non-technically the kingdom of God and the kingdom of Satan and how the two are in warfare,, how that warfare affects us, how evil spirits can affect us (opposition, bondage, and temptation). Then it goes into how Satan and other evil spirits are defeated. Vaious types of deliverances and deliverance ministries are then discussed - self-deliverance, fraternal deliverance, pastoral deliverance, and then "special deliverances" by people with special ministries in deliverance and/or exorcism. The chapter on "Conducting the Deliverance Ministry" is very helpful in suggesting a model and format, how to get started, and gives a few case histories. The last chapter is on the important topic of discernment, as deliverances should not be done unless and until it is definitely discerned to be appropriate, as confusion can cause harm.
Deliverance from Evil Spirits: A Practical Manual by Francis MacNutt (Christian Healing Ministry)
Reviewd by Amanda2 With 288 pages this is a manual that covers a lot of ground, using the familiar basic format of the existence of demons, what they can do (oppression, infestation, temptations, obstructions, demonization, possession), and discernment. McNutt then goes into more detail about the curses, ritual satanic abuse, trauma, sin, ancestral spirits, how the judgements of other people can act like curses, vows, and bondages thru sexual union. Then he discusses deliverance ministry in the early Church and how it has changed and is changing. He then describes 3 levels of deliverance, following chapters describe how a person should prepare himself for the serious and demanding work of deliverance, and how to form a deliverance team in his models, how to prepare the person who is to be delivered, and then ideas on how to do deliverance for each kind of the above mentioned situations - trauma, sin, curses, ritual satanic abuse, etc.
Deliverance Prayer: Experiential, Psychological and Theological Approaches by Matthew Linn, Dennis Linn
Reviewed by Amanda2 This is an anthology of articles written by various authors, including Francis McNutt, Rober Faricy, and others with expertize in various aspects of this field. The foreward by Bishop Joseph McKinney describes the project that resulted in this book; an effort to bring theologians and pastoral leaders together, along with some psychologists. He also says , "quacks abound" and must be identified, and gifted pastoral leaders abound and must be identified. A demonstrative case study is done early in the book, how the woman looked in the beginning (like a normal devout Catholic), the 3 day deliverance process, and what changes took place as results. Robert Faricy does the chapter on the various affects that evil spirits can have and how. Rev. John Healey does a special chapter specifically discussing deliverance in relation to the Catholic Charismatic Renewal. There are two chapters which discuss the relationship between Church involvement and psychiatric involvement in collaboration.
Unbound: A Practical Guide to Deliverance from Evil Spirits: by Neal Lozano
Reported by SpiroSparrow to be the best book that he has ever found on the subject of demonic possession/ oppression and how a Christian should deal with it.
Christian, Set Yourself Free: by Graham, Shirley Powell

I'm in the middle of reading a book by Gerald Brittle called "Demonologist". It's a book on the life experiences of Ed and Lorraine Warren as exorcists and demonologists. Based on Amazon.com reviews, I thought it would be a solid work from a Catholic perspective, unfortunately I can't recommend the book.
While the Warrens are Catholic and do have decades of experience in battling demonic forces particularly in homes, they also are under demonic deception and their conclusions/teachings mostly miss the mark. Lorraine calls herself a clairvoyant and medium, but misrepresents that as being the gift of discerning spirits. I can't understand how someone who works so closely with priests in exorcisms can miss the scriptural admonitions against holding seances and allowing demons to speak through her. If she indeed can see into the spirit realm as she claims and speak with demons and the dead, then she does so under a demonic anointing, so any "facts" she presents are totally questionable. I'm actually going to stop reading the book at this point and throw it away. The further into it I get, the more ignorant of spiritual realities I realize they are.
They go into great detail to document the power of demons haunting homes, discussing objects that materialize and dematerialize, countless thousands of hours of demonic voices on tape, hundreds of photos of objects levitating, and documented testimonies of attacks and killings committed by demons. So they've witnessed the worst of it, but they still don't get it. They don't truly understand demons and the nature of fallen angels. They seem to think positive attitudes are sufficient to fend off demons and that demons are very rare and can only infuence someone when specifically invoked through occult involvement.
Anyway, I wrote all of that as a warning against the book. While I don't sense anything evil about the book, it is deceptive and can't be trusted as a source of truth. One example is that they go into some detail how a seance can be conducted without getting possessed by a demon so that someone could contact a deceased relative - the key is to have positive thinking from everyone involved . . . yeah, right.
Hope this prevents someone from making the mistake of purchasing their material.

I think they do way too much playing with the demons, though they think they know how to protect themselves and do it "safely". I think the demons are playing them in the end.
They actually are considered international experts who are frequently called in when homes are haunted/demonized all around the world. Ed Warren is one of only 7 "demonologists" in the U.S., the other 6 being Catholic priests.
The only smart thing they do is they work directly with priests who actually perform the exorcisms knowing their limitations. They seem to have started as ghost hunters and were startled to realize the existence of demons while they were studying ghosts. So they kind of approached it from a "scientific" standpoint. And because they learned that demons hate clergy and fear Jesus, that made them religious and caused them to cooperate with the Church. But they have this blind spot that they aren't aware of . . . specifically, Lorraine's psychic abilities, which we in charismatic circles understand as being demonically empowered. So she uses demons and sin to discover and battle demons . . . not a good recipe.
They also are foolish enough to keep many objects that were/are demonically influenced in their home to study them or as scientific acquisitions. For instance, there was a life sized doll that was used by a demon to terrorize a family - the doll would move all around house appearing in different locations every day. It became the focal point for the demon to scare the family. The Warrens helped to control the demonic attacks on the family, and they removed the doll, but instead of burning the thing, they keep it in their home and occassionally it does the same thing to them. So I agree with your assessment that they seem to enjoy a fascination with the demonic.
I ordered the book because me and my family had been under direct demonic attack recently and I was trying to read more to increase my knowledge.
We've really been experiencing some wonderful victories in the Lord, including seeing a brother-in-law delivered from a 20 year cocaine addiction, a personal calling to the priesthood in the CEC for me and a bunch of other blessings. Suddenly, as we were experiencing these wonderful breakthroughs, everyone in the house all became ill at the same time (my wife and I, our 3 young boys and my in-laws). And we hadn't been able to shake it for over a month one illness after another. Sleep was being interrupted by demonic attacks (fear and oppression) and voices. Sons having problems at school. Hearing footsteps walking across the room and watching a computer turn on by itself (no kidding). Hearing objects move at night (we'd be awakened by sounds in our room). Knowing what was happening, I grabbed some Holy Water and Anointing Oil and went through the house. All the wierd stuff stopped immmediately, my sons school problems straightened out and just this past weekend, we're all finally healthy.
I love advances in the Lord, but they always seem to attract extra attention from our enemy as well. The Lord is teaching me how to employ regular prayers and practices to head off such attacks in the future. I thought this book would help, but it can't. It's in the trash.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. A couple of my own experiences are: meeting a Satanic priest and trying to minister to him for awhile,,, I had a priest who was my spiritual director at the time and I learned a lot. I did get oppressed at that time and delivered shortly after and learned from that too.
He was a young man in his 20's who was working in a popular record shop. I noticed a ring on his finger that was a goat or ram's head, and I asked him humorously if he was a Satanist,, and he told me yes, that he was a Satanic priest. I asked if we could talk and he said yes. It was near Palm Sunday at the time, I don't remember if just before or just after. I went back to the record shop a few times in the next few days, 'browsing' and talked to him a few times. It was very interesting.
His parents were Satanists and had brought him up in this. I asked him about his beliefs and he told me the basic beliefs and structure of this group of Satanists. I then also went to the library and found a couple of good books about Satanism and various groups and types and leaders. The man also pointed out to me a couple of other people who were into Satanic religions. I discussed it also with my spiritual advisor, who is a Dominican priest , and whom I still consult at times - including when I wrote soem things here about discernment and deliverance.
Our post office here is open on Good Friday, and Holy Saturday, and I happened to bump into him there and then. He became very paranoid and told me to cease trying to talk to him. I explained that that encounter was 'coincidence', but he thought I was stalking him. He explained to me that he had had some terrible experiences with some people who either insulted him and threatened him in trying to convert him, or who thumped Bibles too much. If you'd like to know what I learned about Satanism,, I could make a separate thread.
I found myself on Holy Saturday feeling a kind of depression, and a fascination,,, and in trying to fight it became only more depressed and obsessed. My spiritual advisor told me to renew my Baptism at the Easter Vigil, and receive Communion on Easter,,, which was the next day. I made Confession and did so,,, and upon receiving Communion the depression was lifted and I was aable to again focus on Christ.
That is how I learned that in 'fighting' Satan many people make the mistake of getting into negativity,,, Satan loves it when we hate him, and pay him lots of attention,,, as then we take our eyes off of Jesus and His Love. It was also then that I learned that God does love Satan,, and that it is the behavior of the demons that is unacceptable... 'love the sinner while hating the sin' goes for demons also.
When I participate in a deliverance,,, I focus mainly on the infilling of the Holy Spirit,, and send the spirit to Jesus to deal with,,, and I find that to be the most successful approach. Also was involved in ministry with some Caribbean people who were on the peripheries of witchcraft and learned from that. And I have been attacked a few times in various ways, and have learned about how to recognize it and what to do about it.

That is my approach also. We need to be "Christ centered" in all that we do.
